Horsetails

We have about eight species of Equisetum in Britain and Ireland.  Most prefer moist, aften slightly limey soils, and only one, field horsetail Equisetum arvense does well in drier ground and is common in gardens.  The species are distinguished by their branching habit and the nature of their usually non-photosynthetic leaves.

All Equisetum have bad reputations for invasiveness, and for many of us field horsetail is something we have to live with.  Please think twice before establishing other horsetail species in your garden!
