Plants for hedges
Hedges are real stars in a wildlife garden. Trees are top wildlife assets, but most gardens have space for only a couple of full grown trees. You can plant many tree (and other species) as a mixed-species hedge and achieve the same benefits in a much smaller space. Hedges won't let the full grace of form of mature trees be achieved, but from the perspective of herbivorous wildlife, they are just as good.
Hedges are also excellent habitats for birds to nest and they protect mammals such as hedgehogs, especially for hibbernation. They are much better structures for wildlife than most fences, and they are permeable allowing individuals to move between gardens. You can check out our
guide for advice on establishing and managing garden hedges.
